Beauty and Desire | Donna Sternberg and Dancers
Thursday 8 pm
For over 28 years, Donna Sternberg and Dancers has inspired an open dialogue between scientists, philosophers, and artists across all disciplines. This conversation has revealed new ways of making and showing dances, bridging the gap between science and the arts. Donna Sternberg and Dancers will present Beauty and Desire, a direct by-product of this unique artistic process. The program includes Intoxication, an excerpt from the company’s full-length work The Flowering of Desire that looks at desire from the plant’s point of view as well as the intersection between plant and human desires. The Back of Beauty was inspired by an image from the movie “Snow White and the Huntsman” with ethereal music by Lisbeth Scott. Inhale, by guest choreographer Anandha Ray, burrows into the desires that reside in the deep nameless places of our beings. The program will include an informal discussion of how scientific theories of beauty and desire were used to inform and inspire the choreography.
Donna Sternberg & Dancers is a non-profit interdisciplinary dance company founded in 1985 that has premiered over 65 works, including 7 full evening-length performances. We use science as a framework to give shape and structure to our artistic explorations and interpretations, drawing parallels and metaphors between science and human behavior. We intentionally seek partnerships with artists, cultural organizations, scientists and science institutions to find innovative ways to examine science through dance in collaboration with other art forms. The company performs in site-specific locations such as parks, galleries, libraries and on the beach as well as in traditional theaters. DS&D has performed throughout California, been featured on PBS station KCET's television program Life & Times, on City TV in Santa Monica, in radio interviews, blogs, newspapers and magazines. The company has received funding from state and local governmental agencies, businesses and foundations. Donna Sternberg, Artistic Director, has premiered works throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Her work has been commissioned by festivals, dance companies, schools and institutions such as the California Science Center.

No More Resolutions: A New Way to Create a Year to Remember! | Cheri Britton, M.Ed.
Tuesday 8 pm, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 4 pm
Making New Year's resolutions is a well-practiced tradition. Most of us make a list of things we will and will not do in the coming year. However, few of us ever get through January before feeling like we've failed.
In this enjoyable program, Cheri will put a new spin on this important, albeit, ineffective tradition. Come and learn how to name your year instead of creating a list of mandates. She will help you look at your next year from "50,000 feet" and decide what the essence is you want to create, not the specifics. For example one could name 2013 "The Year of Good Decisions" and then remain open to making wise decisions all year round. Or "The Year of Healthy Relationships" or "The Year of Self Care."
By departing from the itemized list of do's and don'ts, this thematic approach keeps you in touch with the overall feeling and direction of what you want most this year. You will find that you can maintain a theme when resolutions often fail. Then you are more likely to flourish and make your year a BOOMing success!
Trigger a Change Reaction
If we want things to change . . . then something has to change, right? As simple as this sounds, change is hard for most of us. Yet it is completely necessary if we want to create a result that is different than the way things are now. In this program, Cheri will lay out 6 simple ways to shift both your thinking and your actions. She will show you six ways to begin a chain reaction of change. She will remind you that one small change leads to bigger and bigger changes and then BOOM! You have blasted right through your road blocks.
Lose WAIT and Keep it Off for Good
This is a two part program. Each session can be done separately . . . but together they make quite a pair!
How Big is Your But?
In this program participants will explore their most common excuses. You know the ones I'm talking about . . . those seemingly rational reasons that we all put forward when faced with something we perceive to be too challenging, too risky, too frivolous, too scary, too boring or even too joyful.
By asking . . .
1. What do you NEED to do?
2. What do you WANT to do?
3. What is/are your biggest but/s?
4. What would be different in your life if you gave up your excuses and lost the WAIT?
. . . participants will begin to get a better understanding of what they really need and want and how best to start taking action NOW! Through written exercises, small and large group discussion, and one-on-one consultation, participants will explore their answers to the above questions and learn ways to get off their fanny and kick their excuses to the curb.
What's The Plan, Man?
How long is it going to be before you get it done? You know "it." That business plan, that new website, that messy garage, those piles and piles of papers that you've been avoiding. Worse yet, what about all those unfulfilled dreams? The project you've wanted to begin, the vacations you've been putting off, the hobbies that have been calling your name for longer than you can remember, even that ever-growing stack of books on your bedside table.
In the presentation, Cheri helps you create a plan for doing the very thing (or things) you keep putting off. You will leave knowing what the next steps are . . . and better yet, excited about taking them.
You will learn some techniques for getting things done and making deliberate time for what's important to you. Life can be filled with more successes. No ifs, ands, or buts!
