On December 21, 1913 something new appeared in the New York World, a popular newspaper of the day. It was a new kind of puzzle that challenged knowledge, vocabulary, and patience - the first crossword puzzle! This year, the 100th anniversary of the crossword puzzle, celebrate the centennial by learning about this fun and enriching pastime while solving puzzles designed especially for Rancho La Puerta guests. We’ll cover a brief history of the crossword, solving tips, and pointers for constructing puzzles. Already hooked on crosswords? You'll be able to showcase your expertise. Think crosswords are too difficult for you? Learn tricks to successful completion of a puzzle. Exercise your brain while having fun and winning prizes!

Joanne Sullivan enjoyed solving puzzles since she was a child, but she avoided crosswords thinking they would be filled with arcane information. But when a friend encouraged her to attempt one she quickly became an avid solver, then a crossword constructor. In 2010 her first published puzzle appeared in The New York Times, the most celebrated venue for crossword puzzles. Crossword editor Will Shortz honored her debut puzzle by including it in his book “Will Shortz Picks His Favorite Puzzles: 101 of the Top Crosswords from The New York Times.” Joanne’s puzzles now appear in other books including “100 Years, 100 Crosswords: Celebrating the Crossword’s Centennial.
