We’re happy to introduce our new sous-chef at La Cocina Que Canta, Reyna Venegas. She will be working directly under our Executive Chef Denise Roa as well as teaching some of our cooking classes including Tacos Y Tacos and Salsa Y Salsa!
Born and raised in Baja California, Mexico, Reyna Venegas has always been deeply influenced by her Mexican traditions and regional ingredients. At an early age she traveled through Mexico and worked in renowned restaurants such as Tezka and Manzanilla.
After she graduated from Culinary Art School in Tijuana, her dedication and perseverance led to her receiving a scholarship from Foundation Turquois. She trained with some of France’s leading chefs, such as Phillipe Gauvreau in Lyon and Alain Ducasse at the “Hotel de Paris” in Monaco, learning the fundamentals of French haute cuisine, respecting the properties and flavors of the ingredients, and the discipline of a Michelin starred chef.
In 2013, inspired by the beauty and treasures of Baja California, she and her husband, Chef Kenji Hisaki, decided to open their own restaurant, named “Amores” in Tecate, the heart of Baja. The restaurant offers a farm-to-table upscale fusion cuisine at affordable prices, teaching the community about local products and healthy foods.
In 2015 Executive Chef Denise Roa, her mentor, gave her the opportunity to become her assistant at La Cocina que Canta Cooking School.
It’s in this magical place where she has fallen in love with organic local produce and has also learned a healthier way of cooking and living.
