“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Marcus Tullius Cicero, 106-43 BC
Good books are like faithful friends; always there, waiting for our other distractions to wane. As a kid I’d lose myself in the library for hours. I’d hide out, becoming a tourist, traveling through ancient history, or find my worldview upended through ideas I discovered in art books. When I’m at Rancho La Puerta, one of my favorite places is the Szekely Library. Named after The Ranch founders, Edmond and Deborah Szekely, the library is home to over 3,000 books, 50 periodical titles and a small collection of CDs. It’s my not-so-secret hideout between lunch and a nap. When I stop in at the library, I still lose track of time. There’s a section of books by the guest speakers and famous authors who have stayed at The Ranch. I return to it every time I visit.
