Blood, Biotechnology and Well-Being with David Wellis

Overviews of Genetics, Cellular Therapies and Aging
Over the past 20 years, biological discoveries and healthcare technologies have evolved at breakneck speed. It is now possible to read your entire genetic blueprint in a few hours, reprogram your immune cells to kill cancer, and mine amounts of data never imagined, all to more effectively treat us more precisely as individuals. Individuals and communities will live longer and healthier lives, and it all starts with our blood!

DNA and Genetics
The discovery of the molecular structure of DNA by Watson and Crick in 1952 has cracked wide open the understanding of our genetic blueprint, how single molecular changes in our DNA can cause disease, how our DNA directs how we respond to therapies, and how we can now edit our DNA to eradicate disease, with technologies such as CRISPR. DNA sequencing and editing technologies applied to agriculture and microorganisms, bacteria and viruses, will enable us to realize both precision medicine and more importantly precision health.

Cellular Therapies
Pharmaceutical development is at an amazing inflection point, using cells to replace damaged and diseased tissues. Cellular therapies are now being applied clinically, after the earlier waves of chemical drugs, such as aspirin, and biologics, such as antibodies (i.e., Humira). The treatment of cancer has leveraged the latest drug development and now it is possible to reprogram your own immune system to fight cancer.

Aging
While cancer involves the aberrant growth of cells, cell aging occurs through similar genetic changes. Scientists now believe our bodies were designed to live longer than we do, and it’s the inhibition of disease that will enhance longevity. Will genetically manipulating individual cells allow us to live both disease-free and longer? In this program we will also briefly review the biology of skincare and wound repair.

Travel Differently and Deliberately – The Shirleyfest Method

Part I: Travel Differently and Deliberately—First, Let’s Find Your Pillars

This week Shirley will lead you on an enjoyable four part journey of traveling in a way you may have never thought possible. Before diving into the secret tips that Shirley has honed through decades of traveling the world, this first session starts at the beginning.  She is always asked how Shirleyfest started all those years ago.  It started by embracing life’s transitions and deciding to organize her life around her most valued pillars. Deliberate travel is one of her 5 pillars. She will share her other pillars and show you how you can develop your own unique pillars to frame your deliberate life.  Whether it’s an evolution from a demanding career to retirement, a busy parent to empty nester, partnered-up to single, we are always changing. Sometimes the change is voluntarily and sometime change is foisted upon us. It is through transitions that we have the opportunity to step back and decide what will constitute our life. While many guests will have travel as one of their pillars and want to learn more about deliberate travel in  Parts II, II, and IV of this workshop, even if you are not a traveler, using this one session to develop your life pillars will be one of the most valuable take aways from your time at the Ranch this week.

Part II: Choosing Wisely-Your City, Neighborhood and Home

In Berlin, Melbourne, Montréal, Lyon, Rome, Kyoto and cities around the world, Shirley carefully picks a host city and then embraces an intentional way of travel. She’s thrown dinner parties for new friends, volunteered in her host city, perfected the art of eating out alone and unlocked the essence of the cities.  Although this sounds spontaneous, there are concrete steps she takes while planning and executing each Shirleyfest. Whether you are single, or just want to travel alone, or envision doing a fest with a partner or friend, you will learn that optimizing your travel means mastering three basic concepts.

Part III:  How to Live Like a Local Anywhere in the World

One of the secrets of Shirleyfest is being part of the community you have chosen. Learn how to “put lines in the water” in order to seek out the right people to meet. Shirley will show you how to increase the odds that those “lines” will pay off.  You will learn why it is important to establish a “first thing in the morning” and “last thing at night” place. In short—you’ll learn how to live like a local.

Part IV: The Shirleyfest Toolkit—Apps, Packing and Technology

Many of us love that we are unplugged when we come to the Ranch. Yet we find ourselves plugging in the minute we cross the border for home. When we travel, and especially when we travel solo, technology can be a double-edged sword. Learn what specific apps, web sites and technology are critical aids and what you can leave at home. Also, spoiler alert…..Shirley only packs 6 outfits for months away. Come and find out how this is possible. It will change how you think about packing.

Shirley Buccieri is the creator of Shirleyfest: living two months every year in a different city in the world.  She goes to her new city alone, rents an apartment and fully embraces the city as a local. Everyone who learns of the concept loves the idea, but most have no idea where to begin.  Her acclaimed blog, shirleyfest.com, has been read in 91 countries and featured on various radio stations across the globe.  Shirley is uniquely qualified to provide insights, tips, and enthusiasm to those interested in traveling differently and deliberately.

Awakening Artistic Senses in Nature with Marjorie Taylor

While enjoying picturesque surroundings, beginners and experienced artists alike will make observations, sketches, and notes to create a memory journal.

Nature is our muse: An Introduction to Plein Air Painting and Journaling.
Turn off the inner critic and tune into nature. No previous art experience is required to enjoy time observing the beauty of Rancho La Puerta. The goal is to not to create paintings for the Louvre, rather to create a small journal of sensory memories.

Session One: Awaken your artistic senses with a sketch walk
Awaken your artistic senses with a sketch walk. Picturesque Rancho La Puerta offers a peaceful setting to enjoy nature while learning to sketch. Every child loves to draw while adults often internalize a belief that they “can’t draw a straight line.” Making art has nothing to do with straight lines and everything to do with allowing yourself to experience the joy of creating art. With sketchbooks in hand, we’ll tune into nature, relax and have fun. Jot down a few words while listening to birds sing and smelling the sage and you’ll have the beginnings of a journal.

Session Two: Nature is our muse. Using your artist’s eyes to make observations
Nature is our muse. We’ll observe light and shadow while making simple color sketches and add word clouds to our journals. When we look with our artist’s eyes, we begin to spot abstract patterns in nature and notice gestures in the landscape. A stout and sturdy oak tree hugs mother earth differently than a palm tree waving in blue skies. As much meditating as painting, we’ll use all of our senses to capture the essence, movement, and emotion of a subject rather than precise detail. In this joyful process, we’ll appreciate the beauty of nature, without expectations of artistic outcomes.

Session Three: Letting go of expectations of what you think your art should be
We’ll to make observations that inform and inspire, with a focus on color. People don’t often pay attention to how different the greens in oak trees are from grass green or how the blue in the sky changes from horizon to overhead. We’ll take the time to reflect upon nature’s variety of colors, then learn some simple techniques for color-mixing. When we make art in nature, our senses enliven and the experience seems to flow through the brush. Letting go of expectations allows us to become more fully immersed in the moment. We’ll add written observations to journals.

Session Four: Putting together a memory journal to take home
This session we will be back in the studio to put some finishing touches on our sketches and journals. Looking at the art we’ve created in nature, we’re reminded of the warmth of the sun we felt while painting, or the cry of the hawk that flew overhead while observing the clouds. Guests may want to collage with some collected items, such as fallen leaves, postcards, and other items participants will be encouraged to collect. Combining memorabilia along with the words and art elements created throughout the week, participants can put together a unique memory journal to take home.

After a successful career as a graphic designer and illustrator, Marjorie Taylor returned to her first love—painting—and embarked on a fine art career in oils. Her plein air painting adventures and exhibition opportunities have taken her throughout North America, Central America, Europe, Asia Minor, and North Africa. Her work has been exhibited and collected both nationally and internationally. An experienced educator, she has taught painting, drawing, and a variety of art classes for children and adults in San Diego and Mexico. In recent years, she has expanded her artistic practice beyond oil painting to include watercolor, acrylic, and printmaking, while continuing her work as a writer.

Christa Cotton

There are spirits and then there’s spirit and Christa Cotton embodies both. Born in the South and built in New Orleans, the brand is led by Christa, a South Georgia native who spent much of her childhood with her family in and around New Orleans. Her deep connection to both places shapes El Guapo’s personality—equal parts grit, charm, and hospitality. From our ingredients and sustainable practices to our personality and business ethos, everything we do is rooted in a love for good people, bold flavor, and a damn good story.

Christa’s grandparents and great-grandparents were farmers. She was raised in the red clay fields of rural Southwest Georgia and helped her parents open Georgia’s first legal distillery since prohibition, 13th Colony, while in college at Auburn. Her instinctive connection to nature and real-life experience, mixed with a business degree from Auburn (War Eagle!) and a stint in advertising, eventually led Christa to make experimental bitters recipes in crawfish boil pots (yes, seriously!) and the rest, as they say, is history. Since founding New Orleans Beverage Group and acquiring the El Guapo trademark in 2017, Christa has focused on quality of product and scale, expanding into adjacent categories like syrups, mixers and now canned bitters & soda while dramatically increasing production capacity to meet distribution demands.

She has built a thriving business rooted in family, fueled by female entrepreneurship, and a grounded in the simply belief of good things done right.

Judi Jaeger & Bob Reid | Concerts

“. . . and the love between the singer, who sings the song well, and truly, and the audience, which has been waiting for the song, and knows it when they hear it, is a true love.” -Malvina Reynolds

Some of the best discoveries are made by accident and that’s what happened in the fusion of the musical talents of Judi Jaeger and Bob Reid. They unwittingly found that perfect harmony while standing next to each other at a music camp jam in the summer of 2015. Their musical spark quickly caught fire and was noticed by those around them – and the successful collaboration between Jaeger and Reid was born. Judi grew up near Montreal, Canada, where her world was filled with music; her mother and brother sang and played guitar and she listened to Leonard Cohen, Peter, Paul & Mary, Pete Seeger and many others. She began her career as a performing songwriter as an expression of her loss after the death of her mother and has written songs for her local domestic violence prevention organization. Bob is a fourth generation Californian, and like Judi, Bob also grew up surrounded by music. Bob’s mom performed in coffeehouses in the 1960’s, while his father was a gospel concert promoter. Bob has been a California Arts Council Artists in Schools, performed at the United Nations in New York, in concert, at festivals and in schools across the United States. His original songs have been sung by Pete Seeger, Bill Harley, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer and many others. Bob was chosen by the Seeger family to perform at memorial concerts for both Pete and Toshi Seeger in New York. Bob has a keen eye for musicality, empowerment, appreciation of nature and social causes in his writing. Jaeger & Reid have been performing around the United States, in Canada and France in a variety of venues, indoors and out, including house concerts.

Eden Vardy is dedicated to doing his part in solving climate challenges so that future generations can thrive. With that goal, in 2008 he founded The Farm Collaborative (www.farmco.org), “a collaboration for regeneration” that focuses on regenerating the local food system, one community at a time. Under Vardy’s leadership, the organization made 0% interest loans to over 50 burgeoning farmers and food entrepreneurs through a pioneering “gift- circle investment club” model, launched a multi- stakeholder support ecosystem to grow new farmers, took ownership of the award winning Edible Aspen magazine (where Vardy served as publisher), and hosted a program focused on innovating in crop production and stewarding regenerative agriculture regionally. The Farm Collaborative is now building a first of its kind learning campus in Aspen that will showcase integrated agriculture while pioneering a farmer “renaissance” of young leaders dedicated to a better future. The Art of Living in Tune: Creativity and the Cosmos

Opening Talk: Drawing The Invisible
Step into an evening of story, spirit, and self-discovery.
In this captivating talk, Leslie shares the surprising path that led her from being told she had “no talent” to becoming a beloved children’s book author, internationally celebrated designer in Japan, and intuitive astrologer. With no formal training, she discovered how to “draw the invisible”—tapping into patterns, feelings, and rhythms that spoke louder than logic. Through vivid stories and playful insight, Leslie reveals how you can awaken your own creative genius by listening to your inner cues and letting life flow. It’s not about thinking harder—it’s about tuning in. This inspiring session will leave you laughing, reflecting, and seeing yourself in a whole new light.

From Picture Books to Star Maps
Leslie’s creative journey took a cosmic turn at age 19, when a New York astrologer told her, “You don’t have an easy life—but your chart is glowing with possibility.”
In this eye-opening talk, Leslie shows how the language of astrology—like music or art—is a map of potential, not prediction. A birth chart isn’t fate; it’s a musical score waiting to be played in your own style. With humor and clarity, she connects the dots between visual storytelling and star-mapping, showing how astrology can reveal the most inspired version of yourself. Perfect for beginners and the astrology-curious, this session demystifies the stars and brings them beautifully down to earth.

Your Inner Orchestra
In this hands-on, interactive class, you’ll get a taste of astrology through the planet MERCURY—the planet that describes how you think and communicate? Are you fast and funny? Deep and thoughtful? Quiet and precise?
Leslie will help you discover your Mercury style and move you into groups that share your unique way of expressing ideas. You’ll see how each “instrument” in the orchestra of life contributes something vital—and how understanding even one planet can open up a world of insight.

Your Life as Art
What if your life were a symphony—or a painting in progress? How would you tune it up?
In this creative deep dive, Leslie blends astrology, intuition, and decades of artistic exploration to help you align with your natural rhythm. You’ll learn practical ways to harmonize your inner world with the outer one—so your life feels more like you. She’ll also share fascinating stories of how she’s worked with Western-trained doctors using astrology to uncover hidden patterns and help patients heal.  You’ll leave with tools to reimagine your life as a living masterpiece—and start composing your next brilliant chapter.

Leslie McGuirk is an internationally acclaimed astrologer, author, and artist with decades of experience helping people uncover the deeper patterns shaping their lives. Known for her warm, down-to-earth approach, Leslie blends ancient astrological wisdom with creativity and science to offer transformative guidance for mind, body, and spirit. Her pioneering work in “astrological imprinting” has gained the respect of leading medical professionals who recognize the powerful link between emotional and physical well-being. Doctors such as Dr. Traci Stein of Columbia University, Dr. Dennis Goodman of NYU, and Dr. Pat Hopkins of Tufts University—who calls Leslie a “soul doctor”—have embraced her insights for their profound impact on healing. In her book The Power of Mercury (HarperCollins, 2016), Leslie explains how each person is born with a unique astrological pattern—like an owner’s manual—that reveals hidden strengths, challenges, and the key to personal growth. Her intuitive ability to decode these patterns has helped countless individuals navigate relationships, health issues, and life transitions with greater clarity and purpose. Also a successful children’s book author/illustrator and former designer for Takashimaya in Japan, Leslie brings an artist’s eye to everything she does. Her work has been featured in Elle, Glamour, People, etc. and she is a frequent guest on Coast to Coast AM with George Noory.  Her TEDx Hollywood CA talk on “The Importance of Being Wrong” received a standing ovation.   With over two million books sold and a reputation for inspiring creative breakthroughs, she brings a rare blend of heart, depth, and originality to her teaching. As a presenter at five start spas and on luxury cruise lines,  Leslie’s talks on astrology offer up new concepts regarding this ancient esoteric science.  She sees astrology as a practical, uplifting tool—not for fortune telling, but for self-understanding. Her sessions are known for being jargon-free, insightful, and often life-changing. Whether you’re seeking direction, healing, or a fresh perspective, Leslie’s holistic approach offers a powerful invitation to reconnect with your true self—and to see your life as a work of art in progress.
