I love jewelry so you can imagine how excited I was today being able to make my own jewelry amongst the beautiful scenery here at Rancho.  The class is tucked away in this quaint little studio filled with beautiful handmade pieces and art.  The large table in the middle was filled with big bowls of beads.  It immediately brought me back to summer camp arts and craft classes.

First things first.  Jennifer, our teacher, told us to spend a good 10 minutes or so just browsing the beads and picking out our favorites.  She also said not to get caught up in trying to match all the beads (easier said than done) and just let our creative juices flow.  So…that’s what I did.  I seemed to be really attracted to translucent turquoise beads.  I tried to mix it up a little and put some pearls on my plate, then a some purple beads and even some wooden beads.  I had quite the collection.

Now was the time to decide what it was that we wanted to create.  I originally thought I wanted to do a necklace, but after finding out we could make earrings…well, I couldn’t say no to that.  I am a sucker for dangly earrings.  Unfortunately most of the beads I picked out were rather larger which wouldn’t really work for earrings, Jennifer explained.  Earrings must be light or else they’ll hurt if they’re too heavy and chances are we’ll never wear them.  So true.

Then I found out about the gold wire…I absolutely love delicate gold jewelry.  So, I had to rethink what I was doing.  Now knowing I was going to do gold earrings, my eyes were peeled for smaller beads with an amber or gold color.  I wanted my earrings to look like honey in the sunlight.  It took me awhile, but I finally picked out all my beads (I think I was the last one to do so) and laid them out in the order that I wanted them for the earrings.  Because making earrings is a little more complicated than a necklace or bracelet, Jennifer was kind enough to put them together for me.  I am so happy with the result, I think they look gorgeous.

The class was a real bonding experience.  I had so much fun with Jennifer and the other ladies just creating beautiful jewelry.  I was also really inspired by the other creations in the class and hopefully I have a chance to go back and make a bracelet or necklace.  It’s so nice to experience that arts and crafts atmosphere as an adult.  It makes me yearn for the days of summer camp, but at least I can have that same experience here at Rancho La Puerta.
