Fitness - an unparalleled selection of classes and experiences

Whether you have enjoyed yoga during your Rancho La Puerta experience, or are considering a yoga vacation here for the first time, we believe you are considering one of the finest yoga programs available in the world today—especially if you consider all the other aspects of a stay at the Ranch that are included alongside your interest in doing several hours of yoga each day.

Yoga first soared in popularity here at Rancho La Puerta and throughout North America almost simultaneously. Although there were many sources of new yoga programs in the U.S. in the mid-20th century, leader Indra Devi (who many credit as being the most influential yoga teacher of the time) was here at the Ranch as well as our sister spa, the Golden Door. She even opened her own yoga retreat center next door to Rancho La Puerta on land that she purchased from us!

Read on to learn more about yoga at Rancho La Puerta…as well as the hundreds of other enticements we offer as you consider your next fitness/wellness vacation.

Regularly scheduled yoga, every day…every week!

Yoga, Level 1

This class is suitable for both beginners and continuing students alike. Fundamental postures, yoga terminology, and proper alignment are addressed in a steady, slower pace. Modifications are offered when needed as well as ways to progress the poses gently for guests looking for a little more challenge.

Yoga, Level 2

Designed for guests with a regular yoga practice looking to deepen their understanding of the yogic postures, breath, and philosophy. This class draws from various styles - Iyengar, vinyasa, and classical Hatha. Inversions, backbending, and arm balancing are included in this practice. Note: If you are nursing a significant injury/surgery, level 1 might be a more appropriate level to facilitate your healing process.

Restorative Yoga

Fundamental poses of yoga practiced while the body is supported with blankets and bolsters, allowing the practitioner to immerse into a deeper sensation of being in the moment. A beautiful practice of relaxation, restoration, and renewal.

Yoga for Men

Designed to embrace the specific needs of men. If you know yoga is good for you yet often say... "How do I get into that crazy downward dog thing? My shoulders are too tight, and my hips will never do that!"...this is your class. We break down various basic yoga poses and make them accessible and beneficial for you.

Note that the events listed below are IN ADDITION to our many regularly scheduled yoga classes—a standard part of our “Fitness Day” experience during which classes start every hour on the hour from approximately 6 a.m. to late afternoon. CorePower Yoga | Michelle Buysse

Michelle discovered Yoga in the middle of the ocean on her way to India in 2003, aboard Semester at Sea. India attacked her senses and quenched her search for true beauty; the culture presents a harmony of opposites unlike any other. Yoga has become a way for her to connect with the heightened sense of awareness, compassion, and spirituality that she experienced while there. She has practiced yoga off and on since 2003, starting a regular practice at the University of Hawai’i—where the natural humidity convinced her body of yoga’s many benefits.

After a decade of running and a resulting lower back injury (Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction), Michelle turned to yoga as her primary form of exercise in 2007. Inspired by those who live yoga off the mat and Yogis who are able to find peace in even the most tumultuous times, Michelle completed CorePower Yoga’s Teacher Training (2009) in Fort Collins, CO. She is drawn to meditation and philosophy and incorporates small intellectual jewels into her hot, yin, and vinyasa classes. Sharing the practice comes natural and is a rewarding way for her to focus on her intuition, dedication to practice, and inner teach

CorePower Yoga | Melissa Hernandez

“You will know your yoga is working when you hear the singing within you!”
                                                                        — Master Shantidera 8th Century

Melissa first experienced yoga in college in 1999. She signed up for Power Yoga Fitness as an elective with no sense of what yoga entailed. Throughout the course, Melissa started to notice a sense of self, strength, and empowerment. Raised in a highly athletic family, she had always been involved in team sports and personal training. At first Yoga seemed to be a way of “stretching” to de-stress the physical body from all of her vigorous athletic activities. “Upon tackling inversions, I began to appreciate and love my body for its strength and capability. I no longer considered yoga a means of trying to change my physical shape, but rather appreciated yoga for helping me maintain strong mental peace and happiness. This was a huge milestone for me personally- to just be happy in my own skin, and live in the present moment.”

After graduating from college Melissa moved to Denver and found CorePower Yoga in her neighborhood. She immediately fell in love with the combination of heat, asanas, and diverse teaching styles. Soon after practicing at CorePower, Melissa signed up for the Teacher Training program. She began teaching yoga immediately after finishing the program.  Melissa now resides in San Diego, filling her days with surfing and yoga- two activities she finds powerfully connected to one another. She is happy to call the CorePower Community her home.

“When I first started practicing, I loved yoga so much that I absolutely had to share it with other people. Teaching yoga is a constant blessing and a lifelong journey!”

Dee has been a senior yoga teacher at CorePowerYoga in San Diego for over 7years. She has been teaching Yoga since 2002. Leading thousands of students of all levels through their yoga practice and has practiced yoga herself for well over 30 years. Deeʼs yogic path has been inspired by a number of styles including Hatha, Iyengar, Bikram, Anusara and heated Vinyasa/Power yoga. After practicing yoga without heat for years, on a trip home to San Diego in 2001, she walked into her first "Hot" Birkram Yoga class and was hooked. "The way I felt after my first heated class was transformational. I had never felt so whole in my entire life." This put Dee on her teaching path. She was living in Virginia Beach VA at the time and their were no Hot Yoga studios in the area to be found! After a few months without the heat, she knew she had to get certified and bring this magic to her neighborhood. One of her biggest accomplishment was enrolling and completing the Bikram certification in 2002. She founded, own and operated the first Hot Yoga and Vinyasa studio in a 200 mile radius in the Hamptom Roads, VA area.

It was no easy task to introduce this style to the area but her passion, dedication and patients eventually paid off and numerous "hot yoga" studios in the area are now booming. In 2006, Dee moved back to her native San Diego town and walked in a CPY studio shorty thereafter, she has been enjoying teaching and practicing the gift of yoga wholeheartedly in this community ever since. She also holds certifications in:Jimmy Barkan Power Level 2, CorePower, Hot Power, Yoga Sculpt, Yoga Pilates and CPY Level 2 all from CorePower Yoga. Russian Kettlebell (RKC). Z-Health R phase (joint mobility movement) and Massage Therapy. Deeʼs down to earth and straight forward approach in her teaching is filled with compassion, connectedness and gratitude for life exactly as it is in the moment!

Focusing on a deeper connection to the breath with the path of connecting to oneʼs true nature."I believe the key to happiness is in the relationship we have with our breath. By simply being with oneʼs breath you can bring balance to the Body/Mind/Spirit." In Deeʼs free time she enjoys long walks on the beach with her 1 year old Akita (Cleo). Bike riding around her home town of Pacific Beach, reading, watching movies, gardening and spending time with her friends and family.
