AMR Women’s Running Retreat Rancho La Puerta
A warm welcome … to all members of Another Mother Runner as you make plans for your visit to Rancho La Puerta.
Founded in 1940 by Edmond and Deborah Szekely, “The Ranch” enlightens and transforms its guests through the power of its program—anchored by an expert mind/body/spirit fitness staff —and also through its stunning natural setting on 4,000 acres beneath the summit of mystical Mt. Kuchumaa.
And now Rancho La Puerta and Another Mother Runner have teamed up to offer an amazingly refreshing and revitalizing retreat.
The Ranch’s goal is to provide you with the most attentive and personalized service possible. Please take the time to review and complete the information under the Arrival/Departure Tab and the Book Spa Services tabs below. To register, go to the Accommodations & Rates tab (below), then scroll to the bottom of that page. We hope you’ll join us on this amazing experience!
Plan Your Stay
The Ranch provides a setting for inspiration, change, and renewal, while the addition of Team AMR (Dimity, Sarah, and Coach Jenn Gill) takes the Retreat experience to a whole new level. The day’s choices are yours to make…and all are wonderful to behold. Be sure to consider them all as equally important: food, nutrition, exercise, rest and relaxation, education, expression… and above all, taking in the beauty of our untrammeled natural world that welcomes you “home again” to your true, rested, and reenergized self.
Practical Travel Information
We believe that to truly make a change in your life, you owe yourself time in an environment of peace, where you can relax, move, learn, be challenged, dine on great healthy cuisine, enjoy the camaraderie of like-minded new and old friends, and absorb the tranquility of nature.
Our schedule allows you to balance your day with fitness and relaxation. Trail run with BAMRs in the morning, take a Pilates class with Dimity, hop into the pool for H2O Boot Camp with SBS, then calm your mind in meditation practice. Rancho La Puerta offers a host of fitness classes, including ab conditioning, indoor cycling and water workouts.
To make the most out of your week at Rancho La Puerta, we encourage you to start by booking cleansing spa treatments at the beginning of your stay, continue with treatments that relax and restore, and opt for ones that energize during the last days before leaving the Ranch.
Your stay includes a 50-minute Ranch Classic Massage.
Day-to-day eco-friendly operations include a wide range of sustainability practices aimed at protecting the earth as well as the health of our guests and employees. Most guests from outside of Southern California arrive via commercial airline at San Diego International Airport (SAN) on a Saturday. Our staff greets you in the terminal and soon you’re on a motor coach heading for Rancho La Puerta. If you live in San Diego or even Los Angeles, you may be close enough to drive to Tecate in 1 to 2 1/2 hours. See below for details.
Please keep in mind we are located in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico and a valid passport is mandatory for travel to Mexico from the US.
We provide scheduled, complimentary ground transportation for your Saturday arrival and departure to and from San Diego International Airport.
Buses depart San Diego airport for the Ranch at 8 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 2:45 p.m.
Please note: Buses leave on time and cannot be held for late-comers. (See below in the event of a late or delayed flight.) The Tecate Border Crossing is closed from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The airport has two terminals:
Terminal 1 – A Ranch representative will be waiting inside the terminal directly next to the escalators that are closest to the baggage claim. View Terminal 1 Map
Terminal 2 – A Ranch representative will be waiting inside the terminal near the Traveler’s Information Desk. View Terminal 2 Map
If you are arriving by private car or cab at the airport on Saturday, please meet us in Terminal 1. Our staff cannot seek you out in the terminal, and we do not pick up your luggage from baggage claim carousels.
Travel time to the Ranch is approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Please be prepared to purchase a visa, which is approximately $30 (small denominations) depending on the exchange rate.
Arriving in San Diego by train? We don’t meet guests at the train station, but save your taxi receipt. We will reimburse your fare from the train station to the airport, where you can catch one of the scheduled Ranch buses.
Complimentary transportation will depart the Ranch at 1:30pm on Wednesday. Please sign up in advance.
If your flight does not arrive in time for the last bus, transportation to and from the Ranch may be arranged through the Orange cab Company (619) 291-3333. Expect to pay an average fare to the border of approximately $100 to $150.
Orange Cab rate flier
Please inform the front desk (858-925-1214) of your intended arrival time and a Ranch driver will be able to meet you at the drop off location:
405 Tecate Road Tecate, CA 91980 USA
Driving to the Ranch
The highway from San Diego that takes you to the Tecate turnoff is CA-94, one of the most scenic country drives in California. In the San Diego metropolitan area, CA-94 runs east-west and roughly parallels Interstate 8, which is farther north. Consequently, the city’s main north-south highways (I-5, 163, 15, 805 and 125) all intersect CA-94. East of San Diego, CA-94 turns southeast, toward Mexico.
We recommend obtaining additional insurance coverage for driving in Mexico, as most US policies do not cover driving south of the border. (Call us: we can tell you how to obtain insurance for the few days you are in Mexico with your car.)
(Note: You may opt to leave your car on the U.S. side in Tecate, California, just north of the border crossing. We will send a Ranch van and driver to pick you up at the border, escort you through the simple visa process, and on to the Ranch! Please keep in mind the Tecate border crossing is open 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The lot where you leave your car is one we use frequently. Typical cost is $5 per night. Call Reservations, 800-443-7565, for more details on this option.)
If you wish to spend a night (or more) in San Diego either before or after your Rancho La Puerta visit… We are delighted to be in a new partnership with the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina (1380 Harbor Island Drive, San Diego 92101), which offers Ranch guests an exclusive rate starting at $179 per night+tax (space available, for stays in 2017). Located across from San Diego Airport on San Diego Bay’s Harbor Island, the Sheraton provides complimentary shuttle service to and from the airport (a 5-minute trip), making it easy for you to link with Rancho La Puerta’s shuttle bus service on Saturdays.
