Brain Health Kitchen

Week of January 26, 2019

Just because we are getting older doesn’t mean we are destined to get Alzheimer’s or another dementia. As baby boomers age, we are seeing more cases of dementia than ever before. The good news is that scientific research is exploding with information about what causes Alzheimer’s. The more we learn about this heartbreaking degenerative disease, the more likely we are to fend it off.

That’s why Dr. Annie Fenn, a physician, chef, and culinary instructor, created the Brain Health Kitchen Cooking School and online community (www.brainhealthkitchen.com.) Dr. Fenn translates the latest scientific information about Alzheimer’s prevention into a method of cooking and eating that is as easy as it is delicious. “As a physician,” she says, “the best way I know to radically improve health is to teach people how to cook with these foods.”

Dr. Fenn’s first lecture, Proper Care of Your Brain: 10 Key Factors to Stay Sharp with Age, will share the latest Alzheimer’s prevention research. You will learn about the risk factors for dementia, the impact of genetics, and what you can do now to avoid getting Alzheimer’s later. During her second talk, Feed Your Brain: What to Eat to Fend Off Alzheimer’s and Dementia, you will learn which foods are neuroprotective, reducing inflammation and amyloid plaque formation in the brain. You’ll learn how to avoid AGEs (advanced glycation end products), substances in food that accelerate brain aging. And, she’ll clarify the hype surrounding popular diets so you know which ones are evidence-based to protect the brain.

As this week’s Visiting Chef, Dr. Fenn will offer three hands-on cooking classes at La Cocina Que Canta. Taking the concepts learned during her lectures right into the kitchen, you will choose the best nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory ingredients. You will learn key cooking techniques specific to Alzheimer’s prevention, such as how to cook with olive oil without destroying its healthy fats. And, you will learn how to avoid the foods that contribute to cognitive decline.

Dr. Annie Fenn is a Board Certified Obstetrician/Gynecologist and Menopausal Health Expert. As the founding physician of the Women’s Health Center, a progressive medical practice in Jackson, Wyoming, she has helped her patients age gracefully for decades. Dr. Fenn switched gears in 2010 to practice medicine from a different angle—as a chef and culinary instructor. She attended culinary school in Italy, Mexico, and at the Culinary Institute of America. In 2017, she launched Brain Health Kitchen, the only cooking school of its kind to focus exclusively on preventing Alzheimer’s and dementia. Dr. Fenn teaches cooking throughout the U.S. and at the Sempre Sano wellness seminar at Monteverdi, Italy. Along with a team of cognitive health specialists, she offers four Brain Works Boot Camps in Jackson Hole each year—7-day immersion experiences in cutting edge Alzheimer’s prevention. When not teaching cooking or spreading the word about how not to get Alzheimer’s, Annie enjoys hiking, cycling, fly-fishing, skiing, foraging for mushrooms and huckleberries, and exploring the mountains where she lives with her husband, two sons, and dog Orzo.

Classes take place at La Cocina Que Canta, our culinary center on Tuesday, Wednesday and  Thursday at 4pm. For more information and registration, please click here.
